Oxford Union President-Elect Ousted Due to Charlie Kirk Comments
The future president of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against George Abaraonye reached the required two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Disputed Comments
The controversy began after the student reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also said to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to welcome the incident.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes announced on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in following the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Voting operations were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the election official was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, the student claimed that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any person acting for George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Continuing Controversy
The student stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Responses
On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message criticized the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".
The communication indicated that if the student were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after the activist's killing and stated that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the union in spring.
