Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The dangerous situation happened on the third lap when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his broken nose section

Racer's Instant Response

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you just see that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be permitted to just sprint across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the circumstances

"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch officials were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that zone"

"We are still investigating what transpired following that moment"
